Spirometry
Spirometry
Spirometry is a fundamental pulmonary function test used to objectively assess lung function and airflow. It measures key parameters such as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV₁), providing valuable information about the presence and severity of airflow limitation. It plays an important role in the diagnosis, assessment, and monitoring of respiratory conditions including asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), chronic cough, recurrent wheezing, and unexplained breathlessness.Spirometry may also be used to assess response to bronchodilator therapy, monitor disease progression, and evaluate lung function during follow-up. The test requires the patient to perform a series of controlled breathing manoeuvres through a spirometer under professional guidance.Proper patient preparation, correct technique, and quality control are essential for obtaining reliable and clinically meaningful results. Spirometry results are interpreted in conjunction with the patient's symptoms, clinical history, and examination findings.
